Q. Why is my Internet so slow?

There are many factors that can impact your Internet speeds, especially if you are using Wi-Fi.  Here are some basic troubleshooting steps that may help you resolve the issue quickly:

  1. Always test your speeds connected directly to your Internet device.  This is either a modem, or in fiber neighborhoods, the Optical Network Terminal.  We recommend speedtest.netusing Mozilla’s Firefox browser if you have it installed.  If not, you can easily download and install (it’s free) here: https://www.mozilla.org/firefox.
  2. Your computer may have a number of applications running in the background that can impact your speeds.  Close these applications. For the truest test of your speeds, we recommend disconnecting the power to your modem, router and computer.  Turn them back on in the following order; modem, then router, then computer.  Test your speeds as mentioned above.

You will often get better speeds connected directly to your modem than over wireless.  This is due to a number of factors, from the capacity of your router to the types of devices connected to your network.  Turn off older devices, including wireless printers and devices you aren’t currently using, and test your speeds again.
